Bio

For songwriter Jonathan Morali and his band Syd Matters, song-writing can best be described as an adventure. Yet listener beware, this is no Hollywood-style adventure laden with action, heroes or narrative twists, but the story of what lies behind the great yet fragile enterprise we have come to know as “Life". With this album the Parisian quintet continues to explore new angles; unlocking audio landscapes hinted at in previous recordings. Here you will find no noisily orchestrated changes of direction, no musical about-turns, but instead the desire to follow the natural progression of an unfolding passage of inspiration, and to discover the new musical avenues that gradually come to light.

Listen to the gentle persistence of Wolfmother or River Sister as they instil their entrancing melodies, reaching deep into the soul, while Hi Life and Lost, thanks to their arrangements, both sound like instant classics without forsaking any of their unquestioned originality. The use of a simple change in harmony coupled with a burst of chorus song in Halalcsillag shakes up the listener's internal compass sending him spinning into unknown territory. The songs We Are Invisible, A Robbery and Hadrian's Wall drift out in such a pure and simple way, but are anything but ordinary. This is song-writing that breaks with the mundane whilst managing to avoid falling into the trap of trying too hard to be different or obtuse.  Song-writing that, in the words of Jonathan Morali, moves between the familiar and the unknown as easily as one drifts from reality into dreams. All the artistry of Syd Matters is summed up here: the extra- ordinary accomplished with ease, genuine originality free of any artifice, a voice of confidence that is healthily indifferent to known musical genres and fashionable gimmicks.
During spring 2010, Syd Matters, took to the road in an acoustic formation for a tour entitled “Balades Sonores" (“Sound ballads"). Their tour took them off the beaten track to play in a variety of non-traditional venues such as on barges, in chapels and even in farmyards. This desire for simplicity and freedom from restraint revealed their true desire for musical excellence. Their album Brotherocean is a perfect reflection of this. The five travellers in Syd Matters chose not to weigh themselves down with any unnecessary baggage and their album only goes to prove how right they were. The fluency of the texts, the beauty of each musical gesture and the imagination behind every note meet the needs of anyone who wants to live their life freely and harmoniously in music.
